Welcome to the Faculty of Medical Technology.
The Faculty of Medical Technology, Mahidol University was founded in 1957 as the first medical technology school in Thailand.  The faculty is located on 2 sites, one at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok Noi Campus and the other at Salaya Campus.

Why the Faculty of Medical Technology?
From its beginning as the first medical technology school in Thailand, the faculty has developed into one of the most prestigious institutes in Thailand, and is internationally recognized for its high caliber research, lecturing talent, and outstanding achievements in international academic collaboration and professional services.

The Faculty offers Bachelor and Master degrees in Medical Technology and Radiological Technology, Doctoral degree in Medical Technology, graduate diploma as well as short-course training programs for continuing education. During the last seven years, the Bachelor degree program has revolutionized its curriculum by utilizing competency-based learning to improve the quality and standard of education and to serve an important goal of preparing well-rounded medical technologists. Much effort has also been placed on the establishment of the Ph.D. program in Medical Technology as the first and one of the foremost Ph.D. programs in Southeast Asia and Pacific regions since 1995. Over a hundred Master and Doctoral students has enrolled in the programs and progressively produced significant international scientific accomplishments. Furthermore, foreign nationals from various countries, namely Kingdom of Bhutan, Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, People's Republic of Bangladesh, Republic of Maldives, Republic of Korea, Union of Myanmar, State of Nepal, and Republic of India, are sponsored by their home governmental organizations or the World Health Organization (WHO) to come to the Faculty of Medical Technology each year for training in various areas e.g. clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, microscopy, parasitology and radiological technology. In the near future, the faculty will establish two new academic programs as follows: the International Bachelor degree program in Medical Technology and Biomedical Engineering.

With respect to successful achievements of the faculty, several prestigious academic awards from national and international institutions and organizations (e.g. honorary doctoral degree in technology from Lund University, visiting professorship from Lund and Muenster Universities, Young Research Scholar from the Thailand Research Fund, Outstanding Lecturer Award from Mahidol University, and outstanding National Medical Technologist from the Medical Technology Association of Thailand etc.) have been bestowed upon the faculty members for their exceptional and talented academic endeavors and contributions to the research community.

In the 2007 ranking of universities in the field of Science and Technology the Faculty of Medical Technology, Mahidol University has received high marks in the Medical Science category in terms of publications by lecturers and professors of the faculty/ institute.

The Sciences and Medical Technology Building.
To accommodate the rapid growth of academic and research activities, the new faculty building at Salaya campus has recently been operated with the main objectives of not only expanding competency-based education and Tele-Education for promotion of continuous and life-long learning but also supporting international research collaboration and academic cooperation.

The Faculty has produced pertinent and informative data through research projects in a variety of areas including:

  • Gene and protein engineering for a wide variety of applications
  • Free radical research in the Biological Sciences
  • Molecular aspects of infectious diseases including malaria, cryptococcosis, AIDS, mellioidosis and sexual-transmitted diseases
  • Cancer genetics and molecular mechanism of cancers
  • Thalassemia and abnormal hemoglobin
  • Molecular imprinting technology
  • Biosensor applications
  • Area-based and integrative research

Many of the research works have been conducted and strengthened by fruitful collaborations with outstanding universities as follows:

  • Department of Pure and Applied Biochemistry, Lund University, Sweden
  • Institute for Biochemistry, Muenster University. Germany
  • Graduate Center for Toxicology, University of Kentucky, U.S.A.
  • Analytical Biochemistry, Institute of Biochemistry and Biology, University of Potsdam, Germany
  • Neuro-Oncology Branch, National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institute of Health (NIH), Maryland, U.S.A.
  • Biological and Environmental Engineering, Institute of Biochemistry and Biology, Cornell University, U.S.A.
  • Simmons Cooper Cancer Institute, School of Medicine, Southern Illinois University, U.S.A.
  • University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, U.S.A.
  • Virginia Commonwealth University, U.S.A.

Extended Service to the Community.
In addition to its educational and research profiles, the faculty has developed a number of professional roles for public and private sectors, with health science academic staff placing an increased emphasis on the areas of health promotion and quality of life improvement. The faculty has also continued to access the public’s need on appropriate technological solutions for a sustainable development of the society.

To convene the quality of professional services offered throughout the country, the faculty has promoted the establishment of laboratory standardization and currently has a network of over a thousand members. Apart from this, partnership with international organizations has been made for the assessment of Quality Assurance, namely the Institute for Standardization and Documentation in the Medical Laboratory (Federal Republic of Germany), United Kingdom National External Quality Assessment Scheme in Biochemistry (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), and the Asian Quality Assurance Survey Program. Moreover, the Faculty has played a major role in the establishment of the Asian Network of Clinical Laboratory Standard and Harmonization with 10 countries.
